So I think I ended up reading almost all of the throw down the gauntlet stories, but somehow I missed yours! You and Shaza did an awesome job with these prompts and putting an unexpected spin on them! I read a ton of Scorose and I found this really refreshing. I think you’ve done a few collab fics before (like 89% sure) and it definitely shows in how smooth the writing here is.
The setting is really well defined here which I always appreciate. The descriptors for the wind and the freezing cold really emphasize the non-romantic notions of Valentine’s Day (ie it’s cold and miserable).
“not on one commercial day that's only engineered to getting people to spend money.” I kinda love this argument because people always use it for valentine’s day (especially bitter people), but no one ever uses it on christmas or thanksgiving! You should show year round love! A love for turkey! A love for eggnog! And for your family/friends/loved ones I gueeess.
I do agree that a lot of the valentine’s day love is totally for show.
“I was so sorry to hear about you and Scorpius. I really thought you two would work out. Isn’t it just awful when things don’t go the way we plan them to?” WHY WOULD YOU SAY SOMETHING LIKE THIS TO SOMEONE ON VALENTINES DAY? Eugh.
Okay I’m starting to definitely pick up some of Rose’s cynicism by the engagement. I feel it on a personal level.
I’m curious if we’ll know why exactly she wasn’t interested in getting married. Is it just married in general or just married to him? They both seem to be harboring some kind of feelings still.
“Well, her mum was almost always right - her dad, however, was a bit of a hit or a miss.” That’s crazy accurate.
I really like that you’ve left a lot of hope and ambiguity for their relationship. With the lingering gazes I feel like it’s pretty clear that he still misses her romantically, but I’m not so sure that Rose feels quite the same way. But there’s a definitely desire for some kind of relationship there (particularly platonic seeming) and I think that some kind of relationship might be better for the two of them than none at all. And I mean surely they got most of their awkwardness out of the way during her surprise trip. Right? RIGHT.
Well, what a perfect opportunity for you to rectify that mistake, then! :P And I pretty much live off of colllabs, so I'm glad it comes across the page too!
Aw yeah, Shaza actually started this piece and I love what she did to pick the setting. I just ran with it.
I completely agree! Year-round love for everyone! XD
BECAUSE PEOPLE SUCK, THAT'S WHY. :P Also I didn't know how else to bring it up, hehehe.
I totally agree - they need each other in their lives, but they're not really sure where to go from here. One would hope they got most of their awkwardness out from that, but you never know. :P We'll just go with that because I like that idea better.
Just dropping by to leave a review on this lovely story!
I've read a lot of Rose/Scorpius pairings and I thought this was a really interesting take on them. I like that they've broken up and there's some awkardness there, but not really hatred. It isn't this big dramatic thing. Just a sort of normal falling out of love. Really great job on that.
I also enjoyed the part with Rose trailing Samantha and her boyfriend through the park taking pictures. If you already dislike Valentine's Day, it's impossible not to dislike it anymore when there's couples being super romantic all around you. I will admit that I would liked to actually have read about the proposal a bit. And I would've liked a bit more of Rose's internal thoughts about it.
I thougth Scorpius was really sweet. It's clear that he still really cares for Rose, but that he recognizes that she might not be the right woman for him. I've been on that side of the coin before and it's really tough to see that person after. I thought he did a really good job of being kind to her.
I thought the chapter ended on a nice bittersweet, almost hopeful note. I don't know if the two of them will actually ever get together for drinks, but at least the tow of them have cleared the air.
Good work you two!
I can totally see what you mean about the propsal bit. I thought about adding a little in there, but the wordcount limit got the better of me, unfortunately. :(
I also thought that was kind of an important part about this fic, their friendship. I feel like Scorpius would be kind no matter what - even after being burned, she's still an important person to him and he'll do whatever it takes to preserve that.
Thanks for the review! <3
