Julie! I've been awful and it's taken me forever to get here and review all your amazing Simon fics, but I hope you're prepared for this weekend, because I intend on showing them a whole lot of love.
(And I even reread Simon this week, so it's like fate or something :P)
Okay, so your Bram is just amazing. Honestly - and I think I'll want to say this in all the stories you've written about him - I think you capture him so well in these stories, and his perspective on the Simon/Jacques situation. I mean, Becky Albertalli herself recommends these stories, so I think that's a sign of how amazing they are, and thank you for sharing them with us!
That first moment with Bram getting totally distracted from his English grade was so cute to read - I loved the way you really showed the effects that the crush is having on him, and the little pangs of guilt he feels as he tries to reconcile his crush on Simon with the way that he feels about Jacques from the emails. It kind of makes me happy because I know that Bram'll work it out in the end, but his mixed emotions over it come across really well.
Also, Bram working out Jacques's identity first makes a lot more sense. I know that Simon probably wanted it to be Cal, and that's why he thought it was him, but he also gives away more clues than Bram does, and Bram is more observant, too.
I loved the conversation of Bram coming out to Garrett - I thought you showed how difficult that conversation can be, even with someone who's your best friend. The joke that Garrett made beforehand didn't help things, either, and even though he's fine with it (and more concerned Bram is moving to Savannah or something), it's still scary for Bram to share. I love the way you write these two, though - their friendship is so adorable, and probably even better for the fact that they don't have to say much to understand each other.
Okay, so I have to confess that I haven't actually read Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda yet (I know, I know, smite me where I stand and throw my remains into a river), but I promise that it's on my To Read List and I'm going to eventually. I figured I might as well check this out since your work in the fandom is pretty much iconic and it'd give me a good idea on the book. If this assumption is true; OH MY GOSH.
THIS WAS SO PURE.
BRAM IS SO PURE.
Like I said, I haven't read the book, but I was really happy to see that Garrett was just so chill about Bram coming out. I mean, aside from the mild concern that Bram might fancy him (you know, because of what his mum implied), it was all just acceptance and I appreciate that. Speaking of acceptance, Bram's mum cracked me up with her advice. Oh God, what a horrible conversation to be dragged into XD
Aside from that, I think what I liked most about this is that Bram is so human, you know? His whole dilemma between Jacques and Simon is just so real with the loyalty he feels for Jacques and the blind hope and desire that maybe just maybe Jacques might be Simon. It was all so real and just plain darn sweet. What a cutie.
Loved reading this!
